Overview

IsoVu optically isolated probe

Reveal fast ringing signals hidden by non-isolated probes. IsoVu™ probe technology effectively eliminates common-mode interference through optical isolation. This enables accurate differential measurements at 100V/ns or faster on a ±60kV reference voltage. With our IsoVu Generation 2 design, you get all the advantages of IsoVu technology, but at only one-fifth the size of the original probe.

The IsoVu Gen 2 probe sets a new standard for isolated probe technology with its versatile MMCX connector and a combination of bandwidth, dynamic range, and common-mode rejection.

What is an isolated probe?

Isolated probes use electrical (optical) or RF isolation to isolate the probe reference voltage from the oscilloscope reference voltage (usually ground). This allows power supply designers to accurately resolve high-bandwidth, high-voltage differential signals in the presence of large common-mode voltages. Tektronix has developed a new technology (IsoVu) that uses electrical isolation to provide the best common-mode rejection performance among comparable probes over a high bandwidth.

Compared with conventional high-bandwidth differential probes used to measure high-voltage signals, IsoVu probes, which combine isolation and high-frequency capability, provide power supply designers with more accurate measurement results. Application examples include:

  • Switch-mode power supply design

  • Power FET design/analysis for wide-bandgap GaN and SiC devices

  • Inverter design

  • Motor drive design

  • BCI or ESD measurement

  • Current shunt measurement

Lower common-mode noise, more detailed information

IsoVu technology uses fiber-optic power and an optical analog signal path to achieve complete electrical isolation between the measurement system and the DUT. Because the probe can float independently at the common-mode voltage, isolation greatly reduces common-mode interference.

When combined with 4, 5, or 6 Series MSOs, IsoVu provides an efficient and reliable way to resolve high-bandwidth differential signals with fast reference transitions, so you can spend less time on various 'blind design' tasks:

  • Floating measurements in power supplies

  • Current measurement through a shunt resistor

  • Debugging ESD and EMI susceptibility issues

  • Breaking ground loops

High differential voltage within the bandwidth

For conventional differential probes, you must choose between high bandwidth and high voltage. IsoVu probes use shielded coaxial cable and isolation to provide high bandwidth and a ±2500V differential voltage range.

Second-generation IsoVu TIVP probes offer a range of bandwidths—200 MHz, 500 MHz, and 1 GHz—to suit your budget and build a work platform with the performance required for specific projects.

Innovative technology using a space-saving design

Second-generation IsoVu probes provide the same bandwidth, common-mode rejection performance, and voltage range as our original IsoVu probes, but are only 1/5 the size and eliminate the separate controller box. The compact probe and oscilloscope connector contain the laser and analog electronics. Compared with the original IsoVu probes, second-generation optically isolated probes also offer:

  • Better DC gain accuracy

  • Better step-response characteristics

  • More built-in ranges

Simple connection, higher performance

The IsoVu probe tip has a range of connectors and accessories that provide high performance and accessibility.

For example, the MMCX connector is an economical, widely available connector that provides stable, hands-free test points and optimal bandwidth and common-mode rejection. Its rugged metal body shields the center conductor and minimizes ground-loop area, thereby minimizing interference.

Other accessories are also available to adapt the probe tip to multiple connection methods. For applications requiring greater than ±250V differential voltage, 0.100 " and 0.200 " spacing square-pin tips are also available separately.

When the probe is not in use, the sensor probe has switchable 1MΩ and 50Ω terminations at the probe SMA connector. This feature can effectively add an isolated channel to any compatible oscilloscope.
