High-voltage passive probes are one of the three types of analog passive probes, including general-purpose and low-capacitance passive voltage probes. There are also high-voltage differential probes, which are active probes. The difference between active and passive probes is that active probes require an external power source to operate, while passive probes do not.
High-voltage probes reduce the input voltage to a level safe and measurable by the divider circuit. Specifically, high-voltage differential probes measure the voltage difference between two non-grounded reference test points. Alternatively, single-ended high-voltage passive probes allow reliable ground-referenced high-voltage measurements.
The 701944 high-voltage passive probe is a 100:1 passive probe intended for high-voltage measurements up to 1000 Vrms.
